Close Protection Body Guard Training

Introduction

Close Protection operatives are commonly known as body guards. The term “body guard” can create visions of heroic acts of self defense to protect another person’s life. Often, these guards need to make the sacrifice as part of their job; and the skills and bravery of a Close Protection operative has no monetary measure. It is because of these complexities and risks, that proper Close Protection Body Guard training is necessary. Close Protection Body Guard training is a legal requirement when applying for a license to practice manned guarding; protecting a person from threat, injury and assault.


Close Protection Body Guard Training

Close Protection Body Guard training is a course that is designed to prepare security providers with the knowledge and skills to handle the duties and responsibilities that is necessary for the Close Protection function within the security industry. The SIA, who is the authority in the private security sector, released guidelines that state the need for proper training and licensure for those individuals who want to work within the security industry.

Close Protection Body Guard training is very similar to door supervisors and security guard training; it includes lectures on common concepts such as conflict management and practicing within the security field. In addition to the modules, a Close Protection Specialist module forms part of the main objective of the training. It’s a more extensive security training program; in fact, the total guided learning hours required by SIA for the Close Protection Body Guard training is 146 hours of contact. This is more than three times the duration required in other security training. Contact hours are defined as the time or total class hours spent with a trainer; including the total hours spent on practical activities completed inside or outside the various training locations.

Course Description

The Close Protection Body Guard training course deals with the concepts, principles and techniques in manned guarding; this includes protection of a person or multiple individuals. It is the application of the basic concepts in the private security industry, including conflict resolution and Close Protection within the security sector. This course aims to prepare individuals with adequate knowledge and skills to be able to handle critical situations pertaining to Close Protection; including the delivery of quality service through advanced physical skills.


Course Outline

The Close Protection Body Guard training course consists of extensive lectures regarding the key core competencies needed by a Close Protection security personnel. Here are some examples of topics included in the training:

One: Private Security Industry

This module covers the basic concepts in the private security sector; which includes the legal aspect, safety protocols and guidelines in case of emergencies. The units covered in this module are commonly seen in other security training programs:

Two: Close Protection Specialist Module

The module also includes lectures on the legalities governing the service of Close Protection, including the scope of practice and the duties accompanying these roles. Extensive lectures and activities on core skills needed by the security provider are developed under this major unit. Discussions on the provider’s responsibilities while working in the close operative team is also part of the module. Three: Conflict Management Module

Preventing conflicts and controlling arguments through communication and management skills are the highlights in this final module:

  • Application of Communication Skills and Conflict Management.

After the course, an examination will be given to evaluate the participant’s skills. In order to complete the qualification, the participants must pass the examination; in addition to the total number of hours spent on lectures. Upon completion of the Close Protection Body Guard training, a Level 3 certificate in Close Protection will be awarded. This certification is required when applying for a Close Protection license.

Facts About the Close Protection License

A Close Protection license is required to perform activities relating to the security and protection of one or more individuals. When applying for a license, the SIA requires applicants to be 18 years of age or older, to be physically and mentally fit and to obtain a passing grade in the Close Protection Body Guard training. Individuals should also be clear from any criminal record or offences within 12 months prior to the application.

Apart from the Close Protection Body Guard training, applicants are require to complete a First Aid training course. Applicants may enroll in either the First Aid at Work or First Person on Scene Certification. The First Aid at Work training is a four day course, while the First Person on Scene Intermediate Award requires 30 hours of training. These total First Aid hours are required in addition to the SIA’s minimum requirements for contact hours in the Close Protection Body Guard training course.

Having a Close Protection security guard license will enable you to cover several security areas; including Close Protection, Door Supervision, Security Guarding and CCTV Operation. This is termed as ‘license integration’. This means that the scope of practice can be integrated within other security sectors.  Close Protection Body Guard training involves the key concepts included in the Door Supervisor and Security Guard training. This means that if an individual has a Close Protection license, he or she is also licensed to be a Door Supervisor or Security Guard.

A Close Protection Body Guard training license is valid for a period of three years. Prior to its expiry, a notification will be sent by the SIA; and the license holder can apply for a renewal four months prior to the expiry date. The SIA will also send the necessary application forms for the license renewal to the address as it appears on the current license. In order to renew the license, the license holder must either attend a course on Close Protection Body Guard training, or attend a refresher course. This will depend on whether the individual has completed other modules in the field of Close Protection such as the Special Body Guard Course or Police Close Protection Course.
