Job Description of an Airport Security SIA trained Officer – Responsibilities/objectives of an Airport Security SIA trained Officer:
An Airport Security SIA Officer have to uphold high aviation security standards to ensure the safe and smooth transition of passengers, staff and airport users in accordance with the Department for Transport Directives, SIA and to provide general SIA security for all Airport property. The primary function for an Airport SIA Security Officer (ASO) is passenger screening at the airport. The basic Airport Security SIA Officer screening positions are listed below. Airport Security SIA Officers are rotated through each position in accordance with the Airport Operating Procedures.

Airport Security SIA trained Loader Officer
Airport Security SIA trained X-Ray Monitor Officer
Airport Security SIA trained Physical Bag Search Operative
Airport Security SIA trained Passenger Monitor
Airport Security SIA trained Explosive Trace Detection Operators
Airport Security SIA training and the Loader Officer
The Airport Security SIA trained Officer may request passengers and other persons attempting to enter the sterile area, to place items of hand baggage onto the conveyer. The Airport Security SIA trained Officer may pass those items which passengers are concerned may be adversely effected by x-ray examination to the bag search operative for physical examination. Airport Security SIA trained Officers also Controls the distribution of public through the screening point
Airport Security SIA training and the Loader Officer

Airport Security SIA training and the X-Ray Monitor Officer
Views items passing through the X-ray unit and decides in which category the contents falls. Where the contents are safe, the ASO Airport Security SIA trained Officer is authorised to allow the item to continue to the collection point. In other situations the Airport security SIA trained operative is authorised to alert the Airport security SIA trained bag search operative to initiate a physical examination of the item. The ASO’s Airport SIA trained security officers judgement is accepted for the Airport Security SIA trained bag search operative to carry out a full physical search.
Airport Security SIA training and the Physical Bag Search Operative
On alert from the Airport Security SIA trained x-ray monitor, and on some occasions on a random basis, the Airport Security SIA trained Physical Bag Search Operative is authorised to physically examine the item to ensure nothing is contained in the item. In the event that nothing is found, the Airport Security SIA trained Physical Bag Search Operative is authorised to return the item to the passenger. The Airport Security SIA trained Physical Bag Search Operative (ASO’s) authority is limited to that circumstance and if items are found, the Airport Security SIA trained Team Leader must be advised and further decisions are the responsibility of that person.
Airport Security SIA training and the Passenger Monitor
Authorised to permit unrestricted access to those persons who negotiate the electro magnetic walk-through detector without activating the alarm.
May perform hand-held metal detector search of any person who passes through the unit and initiates the alarm device. May ask for the production of items in that area i.e. pockets to satisfy himself/herself that items are acceptable.
In the event that a passenger is required to undertake a physical examination, or the source of the alarm cannot be detected by electronic means, the officers is to advise the Team Leader who will make the decision regarding further action.
Airport Security SIA training and the Explosive Trace Detection Operators
Screening officers are regularly required to carry out Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) on passengers moving through the screening point.
On a continuous random basis, required to test the passenger, the external surfaces of hand baggage and the internal space of hand baggage. In the event that a passenger or their hand baggage records a positive test result, the matter is made known to the Team Leader and dealt with in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
At each point the ASO SIA trained security officer is responsible for maintaining safety, working as part of a team and managing the public. Rotations of positions are mandatory in order to relieve stress and provide an opportunity for ASOs Airport SIA trained security officers to maintain their attention to detail and composure. ASOs are exposed to frequent conflict with the public and must maintain a preparedness to engage in conflict negotiation. In addition to their primary duties, ASOs Airport SIA trained security officers must be prepared for tasking on secondary duties.
Secondary duties of an Airport SIA Security guard
Secondary duties for an Airport SIA trained security officer may include, but are not limited to:
- Aircraft Guarding and inspections – physically inspecting the inside of the aircraft
- Check baggage inspections at airline check-in counters
- monitoring cargo baggage
- Control room operations – SIA CCTV and Access control
- Crowd control operations
- guarding of exit and entry doors and loading docks
- Maintaining of sterile areas
- Passenger hand-baggage inspections at gates & boarding lounges
- Wheel chair escorts for passengers
Knowledge and Experience required to be an Airport Security SIA guard:
- Have good fitness levels
- pass a basic health check examination
- Have no previous criminal convictions or records
- Be well presentable
- Be able to read, understand and to write reports
- Must complete basic aviation security training
- Must complete Department for Transport x-ray competency test
- Have a checkable work history of at least 5 years in order to meet Department for Transport Regulations
