Course Description
The Emergency First Aid at Work Training is a training program that deals with the basic concepts of first aid. The course teaches an individual how to deal with life threatening situations and sustaining life until medical professionals arrive. The practical application of this knowledge is also taught in order to simulate real life accidents and situations that require the use of first aid.
Objectives of the Course
At the end of the Emergency First Aid at Work Training the individual is expected to have acquired the proper skills, knowledge and attitude towards first aid. The main goal of the training is to empower the individual on how to properly use the skills and knowledge acquired.
The training also aims to:
- Prevent illness and injury to others and to self;
- Preserve life;
- Prevent further harm to an injured individual;
- Promote recovery at the earliest time possible.
Course Outline
The Emergency First Aid at Work Training includes the following topics in a three day training session. The following course topics will be given:
1. General Health: Provides general information regarding health, illness and injury. It also provides a background on how to prevent injuries.
2. CPR or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation: It is an emergency medical procedure which aims to return life by utilizing air for breathing and manually pumping the heart to restore circulation. Includes lectures, demonstrations and return demonstrations.
3. Medical Conditions: Discusses the common medical conditions and how to recognize them. Each discussion will include demonstrations on how to properly and safely administer first aid to these common illnesses and medical conditions:
- Shock
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Diabetic Emergency
- Seizures and Epilepsy
- Asthma Attack
- Airway obstruction
- Poisoning and drug overdose
- Burns
- Bleeding and wounds
- Injuries: Head and Spinal Injury.
- Fractures, dislocations, strain ad sprain
4. Miscellaneous Activities: Includes lectures on record keeping, personal hygiene in first aid situations, content of first aid boxes and communication technique in an emergency situation.
5. Simulations: The goal of this last part is to consolidate all that the person has learned in the training. A certain situation will be provided for trainees. The situations might include accidents like a plane crash, a burning building, or and earthquake. The main goal here is to apply first aid at work to in the given situation. Trainees are expected to act out and try to rescue and administer first aid during the given situation.
Evaluation
The evaluation for Emergency First Aid at Work Training includes a set of exams to test individual’s knowledge and critical thinking skills; covering the key competency modules. Essential knowledge and understanding of the modules will ensure proper execution of the interventions and key skills for first aid delivery. The exam will cover most of the lecture modules and aims to test the person’s understanding. Most of the questions are in situational form which will facilitate critical thinking skills on how to act for certain scenarios. Multiple choice questions will be given.
To assess whether the Emergency First Aid at Work Training participants were able to attain the pre-set goals, and return demonstrations are also given. Return demo’s is the most common test to check skills competency. It includes acting out or showing the trainer the proper procedure that needs to be done for certain situations. In all of the evaluations, the return demonstration would be the most tricky and difficult because it entails the understanding of the lectures and doing the right thing at the right time.
After the Training
Certification will be given upon completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work Training. This will state the qualification enabling the provider to administer First Aid in the workplace. Certification is recognized by the Health and Safety Executives and it is valid for three years. Prior to the expiration of the certification, a refresher course is needed for the renewal. The Emergency First Aid at Work Refresher course will ensure that the individual’s knowledge and skills needed in the delivery of first aid are up to date and within the standards.
