Introduction
If you go to a nearby pub, bar, concert or any special event, you will almost always see a big guy standing around; often wearing t-shirt and shades. Even more than their big masculine bodies, you’ll be intimidated by the way they stare at you; simply by their gesture of standing with their arms crossed and two feet apart. Their mere presence can prevent arguments from flaring up. You may wonder if this is in fact part of their training program? These personnel guarding the doorway are commonly known as bouncers. Technically, they are also called Door Supervisors. Door Supervisors or bouncers undergo specialized training and licensing in order to be effective in their jobs. More than the physical characteristic, these tough men are also equipped with the skills needed to prevent any unwanted incidents from occurring. Their main function is not only regulating the entrance to a venue, but to prevent conflict from happening. Hence, the stereotype image of Door Supervisors “bouncing” or using physical intervention to resolve conflict is obsolete. The modern Door Supervisors use communication skills and they prefer to talk to people. Let’s take a closer look at bouncers and their Door Supervisor training.
Door Supervisor
Door Supervisors are the security personnel responsible for manned guarding of events that take place at licensed premises. Licensed premises can include pubs, nightclubs or public venues; mostly any venue that provides entertainment and alcohols. Guarding these licensed premises includes activities that will prevent unauthorized entry or damage to the property. It includes the right to determine suitability and give authority for people to access premises. It is also part of their job to ensure that venue policies are upheld. They need to decide on the proper management techniques to prevent unwanted incidents, trouble outbreaks or other irregularities from happening. In case these types of incidents should occur, they also have the capacity to act accordingly to resolve conflicts.
In order to legally practice as a Door Supervisor in the UK, proper Door Supervisor training should be completed. Door Supervisor training courses are offered in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Portsmouth and other training venues. Certification will serve as the required qualification needed in order to apply for a licence. The SIA recommends training and licensure to safeguard the quality of the services offered in the private security sectors. Door Supervisor Training
To complete a Door Supervisor training course, applicants must take common modules on basic concepts of the private security sector as well as conflict management. These are similar modules included in the security guard training. Security guard training however is different from a Door Supervisor training. Additional units in Door Supervisor Specialization and Physical Interventions are needed to complete the Door Supervisor training course. The SIA recommends 30 contact hours of guided learning for the Door Supervisor training course. Contact hours refers to the recommended total time that a trainee needs to complete or spent with the trainer; including the time needed to complete training exercises and assessments. Upon completion of doorman supervisor training, Level 2 certification in Door Supervisor qualification title is awarded.
Door Supervisor Training: Course Description
This course aims to enhance security personnel’s knowledge and skills in regard to the practice of their profession as a Door Supervisor. The course involves discussion on basic concept related to the private security sector, common skills in conflict management and skills on door supervision and physical intervention skills needed in performance of their duties. Aside from training lectures, the course also includes examination covering the core competencies needed to be a Door Supervisor.

One: Common Concepts in the Security Industry
This module deals with needed knowledge about the private security sectors. Under this module, units on legalities, health and safety protocols, including guidelines for safe practice in the private security industry, are included.

Two: Door Supervisor Specialist

Three: Conflict Management
This module covers principles and techniques to prevent conflicts and interventions for conflict management. This module discusses the primary responsibility of Door Supervisors in utilization of communications skills and non-physical technique to prevent or resolve conflict and untoward incidents.

Four: Physical Interventions Skills
Methods, techniques and implication of physical intervention in door supervision are the central concept behind this module. Focus on the techniques in risk prevention and non-pain method of escorting and disengagement.

Door Supervisor License
A Door Supervisor license holder can do functions in door supervision, security guarding, CCTV roles within the security guarding, and key holding. The following are qualifications needed in applying for a Door Supervisor License:
- Age requirement: 18 Years and Above
- Door Supervisor Training Award
- Identity Check
- Criminal Record Check
Part of the qualification requirements when applying for the license is a criminal record check. Previous imprisonments, suspended sentences, fines, community disposals and criminal records should have occurred at least 12 months prior to application of license. Depending on the offense, the individual may also be required to be free from grave penalty for 5 years prior to application.
A SIA license is valid for three years and can be renewed 4 months prior to the expiry of the licence. The SIA will contact the license holder before the expiry date and will send renewal application forms; notifying the license holder that his / her license is due for renewal. Qualifications are needed to be checked even for the renewal of licence. You either need to complete the whole Door Supervisor training course, or complete a refresher course. Training sessions are held regularly in training venues located all over the country.
Having a close protection body guard license can cover functions of Door Supervisor and can also be integrated in the other security sectors. This is term as licence integration which is an advantage of getting certifications and licensure. Since the Door Supervisor training also involves modules similar to training sessions in other security sectors; those with a Door Supervisor training license can also function as a security guard. Furthermore, those with licence for close protection guarding won’t need a Door Supervisor training because they are already licensed to do door supervision functions.
