set out in the Licensing Act of 2003 requires
any person working in an industry involving sale
of alcohol on their premises to be in possession
of a valid personal licence

course about?
The APLH course will teach students about the
law relating to sell of alcohol and the
responsibilities they have as personal licence
holders.

the course content of NCPLH and APLH?

is broadly similar. It is very straight-forward
and user-friendly.

What is QCF?
QCF is the
new Qualifications and Curriculum Framework that
the old NCPLH will go onto once it becomes APLH.
A new shared unit have been developed where
under the new QCF every unit will have a credit
value.
Will the APLH examination become more
difficult?
No, the
APLH will continue to be delivered as a one-day
course with a multiple-choice exam at the end of
it.
Are there any pre-requisites for entry into the course?
No
pre-requisites exist. Candidates should have a
minimum level of literacy and numeracy.
Can people with special needs take the APLH
course?
Yes,
arrangements are in place for special needs.
How long will the APLH course take to
complete?
The guided
learning hours for the APLH licence
qualification are approximately 6 – 9 hours.
What is the core syllabus of the Award for Personal Licence Holder course?
Candidates
must understand the nature of alcohol, the
licensing law, the protection of children and
the powers and enforcement of this law.
What can I expect at the examination?
The APLH
qualification is assessed by a 40 question
multiple-choice examination. Candidates must
achieve a score of at least 28/40. The
examination paper is set and marked by HABC and
the duration of the APLH examination is 1 hour.
